EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
