A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
