Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
