WHO Raises Alert Over Critical Lack of Obesity Jabs

Less than a tenth of individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its first recommendations on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, over two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The latest guidelines recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and ongoing support," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to widespread access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the current most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline urges nations and manufacturers to increase access, through approaches including voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Operate

The injections replicate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness so individuals eat less.

Patients typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Studies indicates patients may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the drug, as their typical hunger come back.

To be overweight or obese increases your risk for developing diseases, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight concerns people in all nations and was responsible for 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
