Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
